Nihongo 1.33 brings huge improvements to the quality of definitions in non-English languages
If you use Nihongo in any language other than English, you'll know that definitions fall into two buckets: those natively written in your language, and those machine translated from the English definition. Despite having around 200,000 dictionary entries, only about 10-40% of those have definitions available written by native speakers in each of the other languages Nihongo supports. Rather than omitting all the entries without definitions available in those other languages, Nihongo has long provided machine-translations of the English translations.
But the quality of those translations has always been lacking, because they tried to directly translate the English, without the broader context of the word. In today's update, Nihongo has been updated to use modern machine translation techniques to take into account the broader context of the word being translated, along with the other senses, in order to bring huge improvements to the quality of those translations.
Major Features
- All New Translations for Non-English Dictionaries - Every dictionary entry using machine translation has been replaced with a higher quality one using modern translation techniques.
Other Improvements
- Improve spacing between words on example sentences and clippings when romaji is enabled.
- Add a notice in the voice settings screen when human speech voices cannot be downloaded because the device is out of disk space.
Bug Fixes
- Fix an issue where the camera viewfinder would flicker out of place for a second after taking a photo.
- Fix a crash that occurs sometimes when there are emoji in clipping text.
- Implement a temporary custom animation for card flipping until the built-in animation is fixed.
